FEATURE STORY: 'The Pen is Mightier than the Personality'
===============================================

The pen is mightier than the personality

President Bush signs a document in the White House.
Handwriting expert Bart Baggett says Bush's handwriting
reveals enthusiasm and generosity.

Expert says you can change your life simply by
changing your handwriting

BY MARK SOPKO
Post-Tribune Staff Writer

Writing styles of the rich and famous

Elizabeth Taylor: Elizabeth Taylor's signature meets much of
Baggett's recommendations. Bold capital letters that are larger
than the lower-case, coupled with her big signature signifies a
healthy ego.

Michael Jordan: The hard downstrokes in Michael Jordan's
signature show determination. Diplomacy is shown in his "M,"
which has a downhill slant. Baggett's assessment: "A sensitive
guy who knows how to talk to people."

Martin Luther King, Jr.: Baggett says of Martin Luther King Jr.'s
signature: "King had an 'abundance of enthusiasm and ambition.
Making the cross in your t-bar long is always a positive personality
improvement.'"

George W. Bush: Baggett says of Bush's handwriting, he "has the
handwriting of a leader. High t-bars, sharp, pointed 'm' humps and
a steady, disciplined baseline. His close-dotted 'i's indicated a good
memory and loyalty."

Thomas A. Edison: Edison's perfectly straight baseline shows he
was meticulous. The humps of his lower-case "m" and "n" are
almost square. Baggett says this denotes a "fact-upon-fact thinking
style (that) assisted him in his own creative process."

Keep your "t"s crossed high and the stems of those "g"s and "y"s
large and heavy, and you should be on your way to fame and
fortune, or at least happiness. "Start changing your handwriting
now and you will transform your life; I guarantee it," Bart Baggett
says in his book, "Success Secrets of the Rich and Happy."

Baggett, a grapho-therapist who trains and certifies students in
the technique, has examined handwriting for ESPN, Biography
Magazine, National Public Radio, CNBC, the Howard Stern
Show and many others.

He alleges that your handwriting not only determines an
accurate picture of your personality, but that by altering
your handwriting strokes, you can change those problem
traits that keep you from achieving your goals.

For instance, if you have problems with criticism or fear
of ridicule, Baggett says chances are the stem in your
lower-case "d" probably has a substantial loop. Close it,
and watch those suffocaters of success disappear.

Bunk.

Baggett understands the skepticism. When he was presented
with the concept as a troubled teen-ager, he admits his initial
thought was, "Are you nuts?"

He says he changed his handwriting and, in turn, changed his life.
He's also seen changes in the countless number of people he's
helped.

"I have researched the handwriting of thousands of successful
people around the world and the success traits are extremely
consistent…You can actually program your own handwriting
to include the success traits and see positive differences in
your life," Baggett says.

He supports this claim using a technique called grapho-therapy.
"It's a cutting-edge philosophy that I have used or taught for
people to change themselves," Baggett says.

Grapho-therapy is based, though not scientifically proven,
on concepts of handwriting analysis, neuroscience and
neuro-linguistic programming (NLP).

But since too much science talk takes the fun out of it, the
condensed theory is this: Every time you make a new
movement, it opens a previously unused neuro-pathway
in your mind.

"A separate neuro-pathway means you have a totally new
and different thought or experience," Baggett says.

So what are these life-altering traits? Baggett narrows it
down to the following seven:

" High goals and ambition - t-bars crossed on the top of the stem.
" Strong self-esteem - Large signature and high-crossed t-bars.
" Determination - Heavy downstrokes below the baseline.
" Persistence - Not picking up your pen when you cross the letter "t."
" Strong physical drives - Large, heavy "y" and "g" loops.
" Enduring emotions - Pressing very hard on the paper.
" Enthusiasm - Extra-long strokes to make the crossing of your "t."

Baggett also suggests encouraging these handwriting traits in children.
In fact, he says, until recently, when children were taught cursive
writing in school, many traits such as low t-bars and loops in
lower-case "d"s were as good as assigning negative traits to children.

He also points out that the line spacing on writing tablets sometimes
encourages a child to write larger than they normally would, taking
away a tendency to focus.

Even if you don't take much stock in what changing your
handwriting may do for you, Baggett says, "What do you
have to lose?"

In his case, he said the deciding factor for him was the
realization that, "If this 'changing the handwriting trick' did
not succeed, I would be stuck with a funny-looking letter
't' for the rest of my life. Not a tough decision…The
reward was clearly worth the risk."

Analyze this:
Write this sentence in cursive on an unlined sheet of
paper, using a ballpoint pen, then sign your name: The purple
people eater said, "You and your silly monkey do not go
home from the zoo on Tuesday. Instead they go to the
racetrack on Friday!" These are only a few of the discoveries
you can make through handwriting analysis.

Slant
A far-right slant means you're emotional and expressive.
A straight up-and-down slant shows you're very rational.
A left slant reveals emotional issues and a tendency to be
withdrawn.

Size matters
Very small writing indicates outstanding focus and
concentration. Those with large writing are more social.
Take a look at your signature. A small signature could
indicate a low self-image. A larger signature suggests a
healthier ego. Also, Baggett suggests making "the first
letters of your signature a size that gets noticed."

T-check
The way you cross your "t" indicates goals and self-image.
The higher you cross your "t," the better. But "t" crosses
that go above the stem indicate the tendency to be a
dreamer.

No secrets
Your lower-case "a" and "o" determine your ability to
be candid and truthful. The cleaner the inside of the
letter (no inner loops or hooks), the better. However,
a loop to the inside right of the letters indicates that
the writer can keep a secret.
